Whenever I mention my blog people roll their eyes or smile in an “I don’t understand but okay” sort of way. When I mention the fact that I make money blogging, however, I suddenly have their attention.

The concept seems simple enough. I write about topics that I enjoy, people read it, and I make money off the advertising. To those of us who’ve been doing it for a while, it is simple. To the novice blogger who’s just getting into the business, however, it’s important to realize what you’re getting into.

If you’re new to blogging and interested in doing it for profit, here are a few things to keep in mind before committing yourself.

The concept seems simple enough. I write about topics that I enjoy, people read it, and I make money off the advertising. To those of us who’ve been doing it for a while, it is simple. To the novice blogger who’s just getting into the business, however, it’s important to realize what you’re getting into.

If you’re new to blogging and interested in doing it for profit, here are a few things to keep in mind before committing yourself.

1. Blogging is easy. Blogging for profit is more difficult. I won’t go as far as to say it’s hard to draw a secondary income from blogging, but it’s definitely harder than most people think. It’s not just about producing content and slapping up some ads. Good writing, proper templating, ad placement, developing an audience… there are a lot of skills required to make a blog profitable, all of which you’ll need to learn.
2. Blog for the long haul or not at all. A huge majority of blogs fail in the first few months, falling into neglect and disuse. More to the point, few blogs see any profit during the first few months. Unless you can stick with it for at least a year, you’ll probably never see any return for your effort.
3. Pick a niche that you love and stick with it. General purpose or multi-topic blogs have difficulty developing a readership. Brainstorm the topics that you care about most, then pick one and blog about it exclusively.
4. Start with one blog. If you have a lot of items on your list of possible topics, don’t give in to the temptation to start a different blog for each one. By dividing your effort between several blogs, you increase the likelihood that all of them will fail. Put all of your effort into one blog to start. Once you get the hang of things, then you might consider branching out with additional blogs.
5. If you’re unsure, test drive. The fact is that many people don’t have the drive or stamina to blog for profit successfully. If you’re not sure, try a starter blog on a free service such as Blogger or Wordpress.com. Feel it out for a few weeks. If, by the end of this time, you’ve stuck with it and feel like blogging is right for you, go ahead and commit to the effort. This advice applies equally well to test driving new topics if you’re unsure what to write about.
6. Place ads wisely. Some people recommend not placing ads on a blog until it has matured somewhat. Others recommend putting them up right away. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. Just be sure to place your ads tactfully so as not to overwhelm your readers. Put the user experience in the first place.
7. Enjoy yourself. This is the real key to successful blogging. If you pick a topic that you love and blog about it with passion for months and years on end, your blog will build a readership, generate income, and generally be a success. If, however, your blog becomes a chore to maintain, it will inevitably fail.

The main point I want to convey is that many people try to blog for profit and fail. If you approach the task with the right expectations and some proper planning, you will succeed.

Selling sitewide links also means loosing lots of money - if your site has 1000 of PR2-3 pages, you could earn hundreds of $$$ a month just from selling ONE outbound link per page, compared to some $20-30 for selling a sitewide link (now, when it has become possible). What do you think?

Basic concepts:

• Adsense performs very well when you use the large rectangle format, and place the ad blocks in your content, normally at the top, so it is in front of every person who views the page.
• Visitors who arrive at your pages from search engines (particularly Google) are those who are most likely to click on Adsense ads.
• Your regular readers probably don’t deserve to look at Adsense, and they probably don’t click Adsense ads anyway.

After considering this information it makes sense not to put Adsense on every page of your blog, but just on those articles that are getting a lot of visitors from search engines. For this you need to look at the stats for your blog. I use Google Analytics. Look at old posts and select those that are getting traffic from Google or other search engines. Place a large rectangle ad block at the top of the content on these pages, probably beneath the title.

Problems and Solutions:

The first problem you might have is that even with only having ads on old posts, none of the clicks are paying well, because your topics are in a niche where there is no competition for keywords.

The second problem you may have is that you don’t get a lot of search engine traffic.

Both of these issues can be addressed by doing a little keyword research before you write your article.

Since this article is about Adsense, I will use this as an example. For the information below I used a tool called Niche Inspector, but you can use : This Free Wordtracker page for basic keyword research.

The “Searches” heading gives an estimate of the average amount of searches for that term each day. So the more searches, the more potential. However some terms will obviously have much more competition than others.

Google and MSN Pages gives you an estimate of pages out there that relate to the term, which shows how much competition there is for the term.

CPC (Cost Per Click) gives you an estimate of how much a click will pay out for that term.

In an ideal world you would rank in Google for all the main terms, and you would make bucket loads of cash. However this isn’t realistic. It makes sense to target keywords that still payout well, but have less competition i.e fewer pages that relate to that term. There is a point where the phrase doesn’t get enough people searching for it, so it isn’t worth targeting. But it is worth considering, if a term has 50 people a day searching for it, but no competition, it will be so much easier to rank for. If you find yourself ranking first you will get many of those visitors hitting your site each day, something like 90% of people click the first result in a Search Engine Result Page (SERP), and as low as 3% click the result at the bottom of the first page.

Once you have selected some appropriate keywords and phrases, make sure you use them as much as possible with out spoiling your reader experience. You should also use your main keyword in the title of your article, or if it sounds ugly, use a post slug to get it the URL. I also recommend Wordpress users using the plugin Headspace, and adding the keywords into your posts meta data.

I hope this article helps you improve your Adsense earnings. I have found that most people a not so happy to share how they earn using Adsense.

It all goes down 10 levels or something like that which sounds stunning except that there aren't really that many people on the planet!

The current advertising revenue appears to come mainly from AdSense too so it is another way of getting paid by Google.

So where's yuwie going? I don't know yet but we'll probably know in a few weeks time. The crucial factors will be the popularity of the interface and site functionality and how quickly it builds critical mass.

The critical mass factor will definitely be helped significantly by the in-built revenue sharing aspect. Only time will reveal whether the functionality is attractive to a wide range of users

Several people don't have their blogs set up or don't know how to blog so let me help you.

First go to your Control Panel. On the left hand side underneath your Picture you will see what I call the "Small Box Menu". On the second row, and last Icon you see what looks like a couple of boxs stacked together. When you scroll your mouse over each ICON it will display what that MENU box is used for.

Click on the MENU BOX for Blog.

Next you will see Tabs for ENTRIES, SETTINGS & NEW ENTRY.

First lets go to SETTINGS. Click it.
Here you have the options to give your overall BLOG a TITLE, Number of Home page entries, Time Format, Date Format, and Description of your Blog. After you set that up for your own particulars.

It's time for you to make your first blog post.

Click on NEW ENTRY from the Top Tabs.
You will see a Page that you will write your Blog posts.

The First box is : Entry Title

The entry title is the Title of the individual blog post you are writing. Give your Blog Post a Title of what your are writing about.

The Next box is a choice of Public or Private. Most of you should pick PUBLIC.

Next Large Box is the place where your write your BLOG post or story.

Click so that your cursor is flashing in the LARGE BOX to begin writing.

Those of you who are familiar with Microsoft Word will recognize the Menu bar options for formating. If you are not mouse over those options to see what they can accomplish.

Write your Blog post or story. Use the formating options available to you.

To Link Something:
Highlight the word or words you want LINKed and click on the Paper Clip looking Icon on your Formating menu bar. The mouse over will read CreateLink. When you click on that paper clip Icon (Create Link) a new mini window will pop up. ( If you don't see the window, adjust your browser setting to allow popups for this site).
Past your Link address (URL) in the Bottom Box. Just the WWW.THENAME.COM and not the Http:// part. The http part is already in the upper box pre-set for you

Once you have finished your Post you have the option to Save as a Draft ( which means Not Published) or Save Live ( which means it will now appear on your site)

Make Money

The following is a list of all the ad networks and affiliate programs I use to make money online. They were chosen from this exhaustive list of 130 ad networks. I have used all the following networks at one time or another and can highly recommend them. They have proven to provide good service/support and most importantly, on time payments.

Kontera ContentLink

Kontera ContentLink allows you to make money from advertising without giving up any current advertising spots. Their technology reads your post and turns certain words into an ad. The highlighted words are double underline and an ad pops up when you hover over it. Normally Kontera requires a site have a minimum 500,000 page views per month before being accepted into the program. However, I have a partnership with Kontera that will allow smaller blogs to use their ContentLink service.

Fill out the application and enter “John Chow Kontera partnership” into the Comments field. The application is sent to my personal account representative. He will approve you based on your blog content and not your traffic level. This is a great way to use a service that is normally only available to high traffic sites.

Text Link Ads is one of my favorite ad networks. They help me make money online by selling those text links you see under “Featured Sites.” The links offer advertisers traffic and search engine benefits and readers don’t seem to mind them at all because they are not intrusive. Your link price is set by Text Link Ads and is based on Alexa, Google PageRank, number of RSS subscribers, and other factors.

ReviewMe

ReviewMe is this blog’s biggest money maker, accounting for $2,400 of the $8,545.25 March income. ReviewMe allows advertisers to buy sponsored reviews on your blog. Review prices are based on your blog’s Alexa, Technorati and estimated RSS numbers. Publishers can set their own pricing if they don’t like the price ReviewMe set. Reviews can be positive or negative. The only requirement is the post must be at least 200 words long.

FeedBurner Ad Network

FeedBurner provides CPM ads for both site and RSS feeds. The CPM rate can be get as high as $10 and publishers get 70% of the money. However, the fill rate is pretty low. If you’re looking to monetize your RSS feed, then FeedBurner is probably the best of the RSS ad networks. To join the FeedBurner Ad Network, you must first have FeedBurner power your RSS feed.

DealDotCom

DealDotCom offers a two-tier affiliate program. When you refer others to DealDotCom and they get a free account, they are marked in the system as having been referred by you. Anything that they buy will nets you a 35% commission. Unlike other affiliate programs that place a time limit your your commission (like AuctionAds’ 5% for 6 months), the DealDotCom commission is forever. That’s right, forever. It doesn’t matter if they buy something tomorrow, next week, or fifty years from now - you’re going to get paid. What’s more, anyone that they refer to DealDotCom goes on your second tier. Anything people on your second tier buy nets you a 15% commission, forever.
